Dorin obtains UL Recognition for transcritical CO2 compressor range

Italian compressor manufacturer Dorin announces to have obtained UL Recognition for its CO2 compressors belonging to the CD400 range. The range includes single and double stage models for transcritical as well as subcritical applications. With the new UL Recognition, the uptake of the CO2 compressors is expected to pick up in commercial, industrial and heat pump application in North America.

After challenging testing protocol, Dorin’s CD400 range of CO2 compressors have been UL recognised under the file SA11929, including:
  • M models: Single stage transcritical compressors suitable for medium temperature commercial refrigeration and transport applications with standstill pressure of up to 100 bar and displacement of up to 36.6 m3/h at 60Hz.
  • B models: Single stage subcritical compressors suitable for low temperature commercial applications dedicated to cascade or booster concepts with standstill pressure of up to 100 bar and displacement of up to 36.6 m3/h at 60Hz.
  • H models: Single stage transcritical compressors suitable for medium temperature commercial refrigeration, transport and heat pump applications, with standstill pressure of up to 100 bar and displacement of up to 31.9 m3/h at 60Hz.
  • 2S models: Double stage transcritical compressors suitable for low temperature commercial applications used in freezing equipment with no need for booster or cascade concepts, with standstill pressure of up to 100 bar and displacement of up to 18.1 m3/h at 60Hz.

While until now special permission to use Dorin’s CO2 transcritical compressors from the CD400 range had to be granted on a case-by-case basis, the UL Recognition lifts this barrier and paves the way for their widespread use across North America.

In addition to the CD400 range approval, Dorin currently has under testing its CD200 range and expects the CD300 range to follow.

Applications

Dorin compressors can now be used for a variety of applications where CO2 provides interesting economic advantages and positive environmental benefits; thus, fulfilling expectations related to the uptake of CO2 technology in various North American applications.

R744.com asked CO2 Compressors Business Development Manager, Giacomo Pisano of Dorin, what has been the motivation for seeking UL certification and what are his expectations regarding market acceptance of CO2 technology for various applications in North America:
North America is picking up with CO2 applications and since we are a compressor leader in this field we needed to keep the momentum to continue to be a preferred compressor option in North America,” says Pisano.

In regards to which CO2 system types, sizes and applications these compressors enable:
Any application from condensing units to supermarket racks to industrial processing to heat pumps,” Pisano adds.
