UPDATE: New GUIDE on NH3/CO2 Secondary Refrigeration Systems

By Clémence Girard-Reydet, Mar 04, 2013, 11:44 3 minute reading

After an additional two months to receive input from industry experts, market development company shecco has launched the final version of its free report on the technical, safety and financial implications of using NH3/CO2 secondary refrigeration systems. The publication features several case studies from leading system and component suppliers.

The free publication “Examples of NH3/CO2 secondary systems for cold store operators” is the next in a series of free publications to inform industry and policy decision makers about sustainable refrigeration technology that provide investment security at high efficiency and safety levels. Being endorsed by the “Sustainable Energy Europe” programme, the publication also features an introduction by Britta Thomson, Member of the European Parliament:

Tackling climate change is one of our times greatest challenges. Huge efforts, good intentions and large ambitions have not yet solved the problem. We must keep searching for more solutions to decrease greenhouse gases. The world’s focus is mainly on CO2 emissions, but we have to include the non-CO2 gases, as well...".

An additional option for those facilities that soon need to transition away from HCFCs
Undoubtedly, the advantage of using CO2 as a secondary refrigerant is safety: the ammonia charge is reduced by up to 90% compared to an ammonia-only system and is confined in the machinery room” says Alexandra Maratou, lead author of the publication. “It enables the use of ammonia even in certain European countries where the use of traditional direct expansion ammonia systems is practically very difficult due to regulatory restrictions. Meanwhile, in the run up to the 2015 deadline by when the use of ozone depleting substances in Europe will be totally banned, we expect the retrofit and replacement of the remaining HCFC refrigeration installations to pick up. Clearly, the solution examined in this publication adds a robust contender to what could follow next.”

Final version: more examples, more case studies

Since the publication of a preliminary version in November 2012, market development company shecco has received additional valuable input from industry experts and researchers on the safe and energy-efficient operation of refrigeration systems that would rely on the natural refrigerants ammonia and carbon dioxide. The result is a publication with more component examples and additional real-life applications across Europe and beyond.
shecco is happy to present its next publication about a future-proof technology offering a solution for the cold storage industry in Europe and beyond,” says Nina Masson, Head of Market Research, shecco. “We are grateful to leading industry players that contributed their valuable insights on the content and case studies to the final report. We hope that the result can be used by decision makers in industry and policy likewise”, she adds.

The publication’s chapters

Focusing on Europe, the publication highlights legislative, safety, technology, efficiency and cost aspects, in addition to listing various case studies. It features the following main chapters:

  • Cold Store Industry Profile: global growth trends; the European cold store market drivers; typical size of cold storage facilities and required temperature levels
  • Regulatory Framework: developments at the international level, the European Union level, and the national level
  • Secondary Systems in Industrial Refrigeration: about natural refrigerants
  • Technology – NH3/CO2 Secondary System: examples of key components of ammonia-CO2 pumped systems; environment; safety; costs
  • Best-Practice Guide for End-Users: considerations of CO2 unique properties; optimising operation efficiency through controls and other measures
  • Case Studies: seven real-life examples of secondary refrigeration systems
